During the 17th and 18th centuries, various churches and several courts in Germany provided J.S. Bach with motivation to compose some of the greatest music the world has ever known. Half a century later, a family of Hungarian nobles surnamed Esterházy served as midwife for the birth and development of the classical symphony and string quartet forms by giving Franz Joseph Haydn full-time work as house composer and conductor. Beethoven was supported both psychologically and financially by Count von Waldstein and Prince Lichnowsky, while Wagner listed Bavarian King Ludwig and the prosperous (and adoring) Wesendoncks among his patrons. Chopin was feted and financed by the rich and powerful in Paris, while Tchaikovsky was supported by his dedicated patroness, Nadezhda von Meck.

Once he was clear on the playlist concept, Bell says he quickly got on board, “I’m a huge fan of music — it’s part of my creative process,” he said, “I put together playlists all the time, These are the songs I like right now, or these are the songs that make me feel excited before a show, When I do tours, I put together a playlist for when the audience walks in, to give them a sense of ‘here’s where we are tonight.’”, He traces his love of music to his Chicago childhood, Although he was “a comedy nerd,” one of his best friends was a guitarist steeped in music of many genres, “That’s always informed how I listen to music,” he says, “I came into it from a place ballet art, dancer art, ballerina wall art, kids rooms, childrens wall art, original canvas art, girls rooms ideas, lavender gir of ‘what do you like,’ not ‘whom should I like?’.”..

Organized by Terry Cullinane and Cathy Rosenfeld, the event is in recognition of Oakland Tech’s centennial year and the many performers who got their start at the high school. The afternoon promises song, dance, music and theater from alumni performers, current staff and award-winning student performers, with proceeds benefiting Boost, Oakland Tech’s after school peer tutoring program. The idea grew out of last year’s Centennial Book Project that reached out to more than 10,000 alumni and published a yearbook-style volume. Many fondly remembered performing during their high school years.

Zydeco was what it was all about for Lisa Mitchell, too. The dance floor in front of the bandstand was calling out to the Hayward resident, whose black cowboy boots were itching to do the two-step. “I heard it for the first time in 2000 and I was hooked,” Mitchell said of the fast-tempo, bouncy music. Saturday’s merrymaking marked her third stop this year on a Cajun culture festival circuit that Mitchell travels with a circle of friends who are also zydeco zealots. She visited Louisiana’s Festival International in April and San Diego’s Gator by the Bay last month; next up is a celebration of Cajun and zydeco music in Fremont followed by the same in Sebastopol in September.
