“Each class has a theme … and they come around and give stuff. The freshmen gave us lots of pink stuff, I think their theme was Fresh Prince of Bel Air…The juniors’ theme was ‘Rise of the Toys’ and they gave us these little voodoo dolls, very tongue-in-cheek stuff. They gave us little trinkets, some food, based upon their theme,” said Schlaff, who has been a game referee since the Olympics began. The sophomores won first place in the dance and pyramid, although the week-long cumulative victory went to the seniors, who were leading in spirit points going into the competitions. Under the county library district’s funding formula, each community library operates a minimum of 30 hours a week. Milpitas’ 30 hours cost $1.7 million, according to city staff. Additional funding for the Milpitas library’s remaining 24 hours comes from a special tax approved by voters in 2004 and renewed in 2013, which provides $836,819 in staffing dollars. Stephen Fitzgerald, Milpitas’ community librarian, previously told the Post that the additional funding will pay for two full-time positions, one library assistant and one full-time clerk, and three half-time positions, two half-time librarians and one half-time clerk, to support the longer hours.
