But more importantly, Nahat imagined the “Waltz of the Flowers” not as a pretty picture but as suggesting the popular ballroom dance’s wild sense of abandon that so scandalized early 19th-century salons. For San Jose’s dancers, who do double and triple duty in “Nutcracker,” Nahat’s longish but fast-paced Viennese Watz, full of whirling turns and lifts coming at the end of the evening, has always been a challenge. This year, the dancers met it exceptionally well. The other waltz, that for the Snowflakes — 12 women — also received a beautifully paced, nicely nuanced performance.
