Who inspired you to pursue a career in the arts?. My mother is an actress, and my father is a director of plays and musicals. My sisters and I spent our weeknights and weekends at the theatre waiting backstage or helping out our parents, so I basically grew up in the theatre. When I was three years old, I began ballet, and at 13 years old, I started attending Young REP Theatre Workshop, which is a six-week summer training program offered through the Center REPertory Theatre. I was student for six years, and the program changed my life. It instilled within me the confidence that I could pursue a career in the arts even though I knew it would be hard. From a young age, I started collecting the tools for my toolbox, if you will, and it’s lead me to where I am today.
The appropriately named program, “Masterworks of Movement and Theatre,” continues at 8 p.m, Saturday and 1:30 p.m, Sunday at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, Petit’s “Carmen” thrives on the energy of Parisian cabaret dancing, including some of its sardonic wit, The choreography is propulsive, stylized and not profound, Yet theatrically “Carmen” throws powerful punches, The chair dance turns into a revolving door for lovers; the bandits’ stomping and beating the ballet shoes 2007 trailer floor to mock Don Jose and egg on Carmen recall brutal tribal rituals, San Jose’s dancers performed all of it with spitfire energy and just the right note of cynicism..
A NEW FACE FOR CABRILLO: Cristian Macelaru, conductor-in-residence at the Philadelphia Orchestra, has been named music director and conductor of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, stepping into the slot that Marin Alsop vacated after her 25th anniversary season in August. The winner of the 2014 Solti Conducting Award, Macelaru saw his star rise in the field in 2012, when he conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as an emergency replacement for Pierre Boulez. A native of Romania who immigrated to the United States as a teenager, Macelaru is a violinist who became the youngest concertmaster in the Miami Symphony’s history at 19. He is an accomplished operatic conductor, with experience at Houston Grand Opera and the Tanglewood Festival. This is his first music directorship; it takes effect immediately.

Kirstie Alley, who has hung on for several weeks past her expiration date, ran out of luck Tuesday night when she and partner Maks Chmerkovskiy were eliminated. I’m sure it wasn’t much of a surprise, considering that the pair were 20 points behind and at the bottom of the leaderboard. Both Kirstie and Maks had “it’s been great but it’s over” expressions on their faces as host Tom Bergeron tried to make the announcement suspenseful. “The second time around was very special to me. To do it once was one thing, but to be asked to come back was an honor,” said Kirstie. “I learned more about dancing … really. I just love dancing. I want to thank Maks for being so patient with me, so helpful, and thanks to the judges because their critiques really helped me.” Yes, the judges laughed.
